Built for the complexity expats actually face

Most tools for freelancers in Portugal assume you have local clients and local expenses. If you're an expat or remote worker, your situation is more complex - and that's exactly what Descodify is built for.

Invoicing foreign clients

Invoice clients anywhere - EU, US, UK, Canada, or beyond. Descodify applies the correct VAT treatment automatically: reverse charge for EU B2B, VAT-exempt for non-EU services, and guides you through what to put on each invoice.

Non-Portuguese expenses

Software subscriptions from the US, cloud services from Ireland, tools from the UK - expenses that don't show up in e-fatura and don't carry Portuguese VAT. Descodify tracks them and makes sure they're declared correctly in your annual return.

VAT that actually makes sense

VAT rules change depending on where your client is, whether they're a business or consumer, and what service you provide. Descodify handles this automatically - you describe the work, we apply the right rules.

Every step explained

No Portuguese accounting background required. Descodify explains what each declaration means, why a specific VAT rate applies, and what you're actually submitting to the tax authority - in plain language.

The AT portal gives you forms. Your accountant gives you invoices. Descodify tells you what to put in them - and why.

The tax setup most freelancers don't fully understand

Portugal's simplified regime gives solo entrepreneurs real tax advantages - but the details matter.

The tax authority assumes your expenses for you

When you freelance on the simplified regime, Portugal doesn't ask you to track every expense and calculate your profit. Instead, the tax authority assumes that 25% of your income goes to business costs and only taxes you on the remaining 75%. No receipts needed for every coffee and coworking day - the deduction is automatic.

In your first two calendar years, the benefit is even larger. Year one: only 37.5% of your income is taxable. Year two: 56.25%. From year three: the standard 75%.

The catch most people miss

The 25% automatic deduction isn't entirely free. You need to prove 15% of your gross income in real expenses - invoices with your NIF registered in the e-fatura system. If you fall short, the unproven amount gets added back to your taxable income.

Descodify tracks this for you throughout the year and tells you when you're covered.

See what you'd actually pay

Enter your income and start date. The calculator shows your estimated income tax, Social Security, and expense proof requirements for your first 3 years.

What actually changes

Doing it manually

  • Check e-fatura manually to see if you've hit the 15% expense proof threshold
  • Calculate Social Security contributions on a spreadsheet, guess which quarter's income they'll use
  • Set phone reminders for VAT deadlines and hope you got the dates right
  • Discover from an expat forum that you missed a mandatory declaration - and now there's a fine

With Descodify

  • Forward a receipt - it shows up categorized and counted toward your 15%
  • One dashboard: revenue, expense proof, SS estimate, and upcoming deadlines
  • Email reminders 7 days before each deadline - nothing slips through
  • Every declaration explained before you submit it - no surprises from the tax authority

See every deadline. Know every number. Before it's due.

Your IRS isn't a June event. It's a year-round cycle with deadlines in February, March, and April that most people miss. Descodify tracks all of them.
