Household Composition
Last updated:
Your household for IRS purposes: you, your spouse or unido de facto partner, and your dependents, as they stood on the last day of the tax year.
Your agregado familiar is your household for IRS purposes: you, your spouse or unido de facto partner, and your dependents. What counts is your situation on the last day of the year the tax is for (Art. 13.º n.º 8 CIRS).
Why it matters
Your household shapes your IRS. It is also what AT works from when it prepares the automatic return (IRS Automático) for the people that return covers, so a wrong household there means a wrong calculation.
Telling AT about your household
For the automatic return, you can indicate on the Portal das Finanças, until the end of February, your household composition on the last day of the previous year. Every member of the household has to authenticate (Art. 58.º-A n.º 6 CIRS, in the wording in force since 1 July 2025). If your life changed during the year (you got married, had a child, separated) and IRS Automático covers you, this is when you tell AT. If you file your own Modelo 3, you declare your household on the return itself.
If you don't, the provisional automatic return uses the personal details declared for the previous year. Failing those, AT treats you as not married or in a unido de facto and with no dependents (Art. 58.º-A n.º 7 CIRS). Check it even if nothing changed for you.
Pré-preenchimento vs Confirmado
When you look up your Agregado Familiar comprovativo for a year on the AT portal, you may see one or two rows:
- Pré-preenchimento, with a document number starting
MGAG. - Confirmado, with a document number starting
AGR.
